Mobile based Applications in Libraries and Information Centers
Due to the worldwide rapid adoption of mobile-based applications in libraries to foster the delivery of information services on mobile devices of library users, there are vast and growing collections of peer-reviewed research and conference papers available in various online databases. Analyzing the literature related to mobile-based library services is one method to conduct future research to enhance library collections and services in the digital age. The primary goal of this paper is to review the most relevant literature in the field to better understand these previous research works, identify trends and to determine the research gaps for future studies. A comprehensive and systematic review of the literature on mobile-based applications in libraries and information centers of peer-reviewed research papers, and conference proceedings published in online databases (ProQuest-LISA and Web of Science) during the last seven years (2015-2022) was conducted for critical analysis and to address the present trends of mobile-based applications in these studies. We identified that many studies have described the use of mobile apps-based applications like Mobile Online Public Access Catalogue (MOPAC), Mobile websites, Mobile databases, WhatsApp, SMS, RSS, and Quick Response (QR) Codes in the enhancement of library collections and services around the globe. We observed that 75.93% of documents were published as research articles, and 42.59% of publications were identified under the two authorship patterns. Also, the authors investigated the current and future state of the research in this field by synthesizing the results of published high-quality experimental studies and systematic mapping studies on related disciplines. We hope that this study will be helpful for librarians and information professionals to better understand and implement the applications of mobile technologies for enhancement of library collections and services in the virtual world.

The rapid transition of technology and storming fast internet has led to an enormous growth in the number of smartphone users in the country. The main aim of this paper is to investigate how library professional in India use smartphone and apps for carrying out library activities. An online questionnaire survey involving 107 library professionals was conducted to collect data and the survey result showed that even entire professionals have smartphone, the apps usage found less especially those which aid the library activities. The skills of the library professionals got a positive impact by the use of apps even though there were impediments to effective use which need to be solved. The sporadic technological updates demand the professionals to get update themselves. The study concludes that M-technology would have bigger opportunities in libraries especially in the proper dissemination of information with least cost & time.

Challenges in implementing technology-based services in academic libraries have witnessed quite a lot of work in this area. This study assesses some of the challenges associated with the delivery of library services on mobile technology (m-tech) platforms. A survey research design and the mixed method approach were used in conducting this research. The topmost m-tech based library services identified in the study include mobile digital repository; mobile online public access catalogues; referencing services; SMS alerts; selective dissemination of information as well as mobile instructional guides and tours. The study established that insufficient ICT infrastructure; bureaucratic processes; poor internet bandwidth; lack of IT experts and staff; lack of a policy framework; erratic or unstable power supply; lack of support from the university management; in addition to financial constraints prohibited the full provision of library services through m-tech across the libraries studies. Based on these findings, this research offers some recommendations that would serve to overcome, in part the challenges associated with the implementation of m-tech based library services in academic libraries.
